National Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU) Inaugurates its Ninth President, Ryoo Dong-keun, Who is Dedicated to Developing KMOU as a Key Player in Transforming South Korea into a New Maritime PowerThe inauguration ceremony, held at the Grand Auditorium on campus on March 6, 2024, was attended by several officials from renowned organizations.KMOU will operate based on its four core values and 20 specific tasks and develop into a prestigious world-class maritime university through the implementation of the 30 Glocal Universities Project.Dr. Ryoo Dong-keun was officially inaugurated as the ninth president of National Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU).KMOU (President: Ryoo Dong-keun) held an inauguration ceremony for its ninth president, Dr. Ryoo Dong-keun, at the Grand Auditorium on campus on March 6, 2024. Among the attendees were KMOU faculty and students, prominent alumni, Busan city officials, and education stakeholders such as Chae Young-gil, president of the KMOU Alumni Association, Ahn Sung-min., president of the Busan Metropolitan Council, and Jang Young-soo, president of Pukyong National University. Representatives of key organizations and companies in fields related to shipping and ports also attended the ceremony.In his inaugural speech, after offering his official greetings, President Ryoo shared his plans to embody the university’s core values and realize its vision over the next 4 years.Above all, he pledged that KMOU will prioritize communication and respect, educational and research innovation, global leadership in the future, and a solid financial foundation. He vowed to operate KMOU based on these core values and identified 20 corresponding tasks to accomplish this goal.To prioritize communication and respect, President Ryoo will promote cooperation and innovation on campus and foster an organizational culture that encourages members to respect each other. He will also establish a one-stop administrative system with diversified communication channels to facilitate efficient task management.Moreover, President Ryoo will strengthen research funding and improve the research environment to boost education and research, which are a university’s primary functions. His plans encompass promoting domestic and international industry-university collaboration with promising companies to derive joint research outcomes while also invigorating the marine humanities.Under President Ryoo’s leadership, KMOU will participate in the 30 Glocal Universities Project by forming a combined university with Pukyong National University to establish its status as a globally renowned maritime university.In pursuit of its goals of making the world its campus and being a world-class maritime university, KMOU will create a combined global maritime university with branches in ten Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.Furthermore, to enhance its financial stability and become a robust university with a solid financial foundation, KMOU will secure funds by participating in national financial support programs. It will also establish a group solely responsible for research and development (RPresident Ryoo presented his vision to develop KMOU as a key player in transforming South Korea into a new maritime power and has committed to running the university accordingly. He said, “As a professor at KMOU, I invested my energy in education and research. From now on, I will focus on running the university. I promise that I will be on the front line of administration as I work with you to further develop our university.”Moreover, he emphasized that “regional national universities have a responsibility to cultivate regional talent, promote the stability of the regional society, and drive regional industrial development.” Accepting that responsibility, he said, “I will significantly contribute to solving the current issues at KMOU, such as training maritime experts for increasingly large and advanced ships, and developing measures to respond to the emergence of carbon neutral and environmentally friendly ships.”Prior to the inauguration ceremony, preliminary events such as ▲ club performances and ▲ the screening of promotional videos were held. The events started at 11 a.m. and were ordered as follows: ▲ the opening ceremony, ▲ the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance,▲ the introduction of guests, ▲ the recitation of the Charter of the Sea, ▲ the introduction of the president’s profile, ▲ the handover of KMOU’s keys and flag, ▲ congratulatory messages, ▲ the vision declaration ceremony, ▲ the president’s inaugural speech, and the singing of KMOU’s song.President Ryoo will serve a 4-year term from February 13, 2024, to February 12, 2028.President Ryoo holds a bachelor’s degree in shipping management from KMOU and master’s and doctoral degrees in maritime policy and shipping management and international transport, respectively, from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom.After being designated as a professor affiliated with the Department of Shipping Management at KMOU, he served as the head of the KMOU Office of International Affairs, the secretary-general of the Asia Maritime & Fisheries Universities Forum, the head of the World Ocean Development Research Center, and a member of the Presidential Committee on Local Autonomy Development. He is currently the vice president of the Korean Institute of Navigation and Port Research and a member of the Deliberative Committee for Policy Research.

National Korea Maritime and Ocean University as a learning university for the Government Invited Scholars (GKS, GlobalKorea Scholarship) Outstanding Exchange Student Support ProgramNational Korea Maritime and Ocean University (Acting deputy president: Choi Seokyoon) has been selected for the “2024 Government Invited Scholars (Global Korea Scholarship) Outstanding Exchange Student Support Program Learning University”.It is organized by the National Institute of International Education and Ministry of Education, for the second consecutive year since 2023.The project aims to enhance the globalization capabilities of universities and foster global awareness through interactions between domestic and foreign students.The goal is to select and advocate for outstanding foreign exchange students recommended by Korean universities that have contracted exchange agreements with universities in other countries.It intends to elevate Korea’s global reputation by affirming mutually beneficial relationships between countries.Foreign exchange students who are nominated and chosen by National Korea Maritime and Ocean University will be provided round-trip airfare and academic grants during the scholarship period.They will also be able to optimize academic efficiency while studying as exchange students.“Through winning the GKS Outstanding Students Support Project for the second time, we have laid the foundation for enhancing our global partnership and boosting interpersonal exchanges between students,” said Choi Jincheol, head of the International Exchange Division at National Korea Maritime and Ocean University.Additionally, the student stated that, “Through this, we will do our best to ensure that foreign exchange students from various countries complete our excellent education programs and move forward as a source of global maritime talent.”
