Introduction of College

Following the liberation of Korea at the end of World War II, Korea Maritime University was founded in 1945 under the flag of "Entry Point for a Maritime Nation." During this era issues surrounding the oceans were not regarded with the same importance that they are today, so after overcoming various difficulties with many peoples' ideas regarding the upcoming future, the school became a full university in 1991.

When the school was still just a college, the field of maritime related social sciences was in social sciences division, while the field of humanities belonged to the division of general education. After the school became a university, the division of social sciences became the college of social sciences, and in 1996 when it was merged with the division of general education, it again changed its name to the college of humanities and social sciences.

At the turn of the 21st century, and with a new recognition of the value of oceans and the new maritime industrial age, the necessity of educating and nurturing new professionals with a strong sense of international knowledge emerged. In response to this urgency, the college of humanities and social sciences curriculum was reorganized and its name was changed to the College of International Studies in 2000 and it has remained so to this date.

The college comprises three undergraduate divisions(7 majors) and six departments with a focus on internationalization and maritime specializations. We are actively recruiting foreign students and sending our students to more than ten countries. We offer graduate program in each department and division and participate in maritime industrial schools in such fields as port operations, logistics, and shipping finance.

Fields in economics and business administration include the Division of Shipping Management(major in Shipping management, major in Management Information Systems), Division of International Trade and Economics(major in International Trade, major in economics, major in Maritime finance).

Fields in Law, International Commerce, Maritime Administration include the Division of Maritime Law(major in law, major in Maritime Law), the Department of International Commerce, and the Department of Maritime Administration.

Fields of Humanities and International Area Studies include the Department of English Language and Literature, the Department of European Studies, the Department of East Asian Studies. The filed of Teacher Education includes the Department of Teacher Education.

The College of International Studies founded World Ocean Development Strategy Institute in 2011 to lead in the establishment of academic spheres in related fields in this new maritime era. on the basis of the perspectives from the social sciences and to deepen interdisciplinary consilience and harmony.

The College of International Studies seeks to pioneer new academic fields through research and the fusion of maritime related fields as they relate to the fundamentals in Humanities and Social Sciences. We also aim to educate leaders and experts who can lead the new maritime age of the 21st century by expanding our lives into the oceans. The ocean is land for us.

A message from Dean

Thank you for visiting the College of International Studies at KMOU. Currently, the world is pushing us to compete with each other for the acceleration of information and globalization. It is notable that this kind of competition and coexistence are displayed against the backdrop of the ocean.

The College of International Studies is a cradle for cultivating maritime experts and global professionals with unique qualifications and knowledge of the humanities and social sciences. To fulfill this purpose, the college aims to produce professionals in our three divisions and six departments. Our graduates are excelling as professionals in Korea and around the globe.

Also, our Institute of International Maritime Affairs was selected to the Humanities Korea Program of Korean Research Foundation in November 2008 and is now working on expanding its potential to become one of the best world maritime culture research centers. The World Ocean Development Institute was established to conduct humanities & social science-based research studies on the advancement of maritime industries.

At KMOU, our students are immersed in a world of academic excellence through continuous self-discipline and careful instruction. Students are given the opportunity to grow as globally-minded professionals, and while studying here, they will experience the most beautiful and exceptional campus in Korea, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Thank you.
