Introduction to College of Ocean Science and Technology

The ocean is the last frontier on earth that has the potential to advance human society. Many countries lay claim to exclusive economic zones and do their best to preserve and make effective use of the ocean. In an effort to join other developed countries in the field of ocean science and technology, Korea founded the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. In addition, the Korean government selected marine technology as the one of nation's key technologies and planned to invest over 10% of the national research budget by 2013.

During the last 60 years, Korea Maritime and Ocean University has greatly contributed to the national economic development by educating potential scholars, scientists, and engineers. In order to further enhance the education and to intensify the university's specialization in the ocean and nurture professionals in overall maritime industry, the College of Ocean Science and Technology was founded in 1999.

The college offers many fields of advanced technology and has nurtured promising experts through its master's and doctoral programs.

In addition, the College of Ocean Science and Technology conducts research projects that are supported by the government, and has also received a considerable amount of funds and support from other organizations. Some of the projects include the Central Research Institute Support Project supported by the Korea Research Foundation of the Ministry of Education, the Underwater Vehicle Research Center Project by the Ministry of National Defence and LINC (Leaders Industry university Coopration) Project by the Ministry of Education.

The college educates people to lead future marine industries, develops essential technologies in the field of ocean science and technology, and helps the government in establishing advanced marine policies. We are making enormous efforts to help the college become one of the three leading colleges in Asia and one of the ten top colleges in the world in the field of ocean science and technology.

A message from Dean

In its over sixty years of history, Korea Maritime and Ocean University has nurtured excellent students and contributed to the national economic development. Building on our tradition and capability, the College of Ocean Science and Technology was founded to deepen our specialty in maritime studies so as to produce professionals more prepared for the needs of the maritime industry in the 21st century. Being based on diverse systems, maritime science and technology are essential fields that require interdisciplinary studies. The College has two Divisions and five Departments. By appropriate networking of related fields, it has constructed a sound foundation for interdisciplinary studies. It also has worked with such numerous research institutes and business organizations as the personnel nurturing project for the maritime industry, Research Institute of Marine Science and Technology, Underwater Vehicle Research Center, Education Center for Ocean Science & Technology, and Korea Energy and Mineral Resources Engineering Program. Based on such infrastructure, the college is working hard to grow to be a leader in maritime science and technology. In addition, the recent designation of the reclaimed ground in Dongsam-dong as a renovation district has spurred the relocation process of four major public institutions related to the maritime and fishery fields. In sum, all of our members, under the banner of maritime studies, are marching forward to pioneer a bright future for maritime Korea. We invite all of your encouragement and applause for the future of the College of Ocean Science and Technology. Thank you.
